Sights and Activities

Lakeside Lodge is situated well inside the National Park and is ideally situated for hiking within the Brecon Beacons or the Black Mountains.

There are a variety of short walks you can do from the Lodge, as well as more challenging ones, including the 'southern horsehoe' walk taking in the peaks of Corn Du, Pen Y Fan and Cribyn.

The well known 'Blaen Y Glyn' waterfalls are walkable from the Lodge, and the Ystrafeldte and Henrydd waterfalls walks a short drive by car.

Whether you enjoy road riding or mountain biking there are endless chances to enjoy both from the lodge.
You can ride directly onto the hills if you enjoy mountain biking, and there are many trails all over the beacons, from easy right up to the hardest 'black' standard.

The popular 'Taff trail', which runs from Cardiff to Brecon, goes right past the Lodge.

There is also the new internationally acclaimed bike park to enjoy - situated just 6 miles from Lakeside Lodge.

Bike Park Wales

The excellent Bike Park Wales is rapidly making an international reputation for itself as one of the best mountain bike and downhill racing parks around.

Just 6 miles from Lakeside Lodge we are in the perfect place for guests to spend a day or two at the Bike Park!

Why not check it out?

Whether you enjoy taking photos of scenery - hills, lakes and reservoirs, reflections, the varying seasons, wildlife - there are boundless opportunities here in the Brecons.

Whatever the season or the weather there is

always a picture waiting to be taken!

There is a wide variety of fresh water fish stocked in Pontsticill and Pentwyn reservoirs, as well as other local lakes and reservoirs.

Permits can be obtained from the local pub.

We took this photo of a 12lb pike caught by a local fisherman in Pontsticill reservoir.

Brecon Mountain Railway

The popular Brecon Mountain Railway starts at Pant, 3 miles away, and travels all the way along to Torpantau, at the end of Pentwyn reservoir..

The evocative sounds of the train can be heard in the distance from the lodge, and sometimes the steam can be seen rising over or through the trees.

Local Towns, Pubs and Facilities

The pleasant county town of Brecon and the picturesque village of Crickhowell are perfect for spending time browsing and shopping, whilst Merthyr Tydfil, with banks, supermarkets and other facilities, is just five miles away.

There are several lovely local pubs such as the Red Cow Inn and The Butcher's Arms in the village of Pontsticill, just 5 minutes drive from the Lodge. There are many other atmospheric pubs and restaurants in the vicinity, including the Aberglais Inn in Pontsarn and the 'Star Inn' in Talybont-on-Usk.

Local Scenery

The views in the area - which has been called the 'Welsh Lake District' - are spectacular. This is a view taken from the hills overlooking Pontsticill and Pentwyn reservoirs.

Lakeside lodge and Ty Taf Fechan B&B shown, giving you an idea of the remoteness and beauty of the location.

The 'Beacons' of Corn Du, Pen Y Fan and Cribyn can be seen in the distance.

Further Afield

Nearby sights include the beautiful "book town" of Hay on Wye, as well as Brecon and Crickhowell. One of the most spectacular sights is the Red Kite (see photo) feeding centre, located in the village of  Llandeusant.

For history buffs, Llanthony Abbey and various castles (Castle Carreg, Raglan and Caerphilly for instance) are within easy reach of the Lodge.

Abergavenney and Cardiff are only a short drive away, as is  the 'Big Pit' and Penderyn Distillery, the only place                                                in Wales to produce whisky!
